What the Circle of Excellence Does

The Circle of Excellence is a spatial anchoring technique that gives you on-demand access to a specific resource state by anchoring it to a physical location on the ground. You step into the circle, the state activates. You step out, you return to neutral. It’s portable, invisible, and takes about ten minutes to install.

It combines two NLP principles: anchoring (associating a state with a trigger) and spatial anchoring (using a physical location as the trigger rather than a touch or a word). Spatial anchors are particularly powerful because they engage the whole body, you physically move into the state rather than just firing a hand-press.

The Process

⚡ ▶ Step 1: Choose the Resource State

What state do you want on-demand access to? Confidence, calm, focus, creativity, authority, playfulness, pick one specific state. Not a combination, not “generally positive.” One precise state.

The more specific the state, the stronger the anchor. “The calm, grounded presence I feel when I’m alone in nature” is better than “calmness.”

⚡ ▶ Step 2: Create the Circle

Imagine a circle on the floor in front of you, about two feet in diameter. Give it a color, whatever color feels right for the state you’re anchoring. Bright gold for confidence. Deep blue for calm. Vivid green for creativity. The color is part of the anchor.

You can also add other qualities: a sound (a hum, a tone), a texture (warm, electric, solid), a sense of energy. The richer the circle’s representation, the stronger the spatial anchor.

⚡ ▶ Step 3: Access the Resource State

Standing outside the circle, recall a specific time when you experienced the desired state powerfully. Not a vague sense of it, a specific memory. Associate fully into the memory: see what you saw, hear what you heard, feel what you felt.

Let the state build. As the feeling intensifies, pay attention to its qualities: where in your body is it? What direction does it move? How warm or cool? What’s your posture? Your breathing? Let the state reach its peak.

⚡ ▶ Step 4: Step Into the Circle at Peak State

At the moment the state is strongest, just before it begins to plateau or fade, step physically into the circle. As you step in, feel the state lock into the space. The circle is now charged with the resource state.

Stand in the circle for ten to fifteen seconds, fully experiencing the state in this location. Let the spatial anchor form: this location = this state.

⚡ ▶ Step 5: Step Out and Break State

Step out of the circle. Shake off the state. Think of something neutral, your phone number backward, what you had for breakfast. Full break state.

This step is essential. The anchor needs a clean boundary between “in the circle” and “out of the circle.” If the state bleeds across the boundary, the anchor is fuzzy.

⚡ ▶ Step 6: Repeat and Stack

Access the same state again, either the same memory or a different memory of the same state. Build it to peak intensity. Step into the circle. Hold for ten seconds. Step out. Break state.

Repeat three to five times total. Each repetition strengthens the anchor. You can also stack different memories of the same state, each one adds intensity and richness to the anchor.

Optional: stack a second complementary state on top. Want confident AND calm? After anchoring confidence with three repetitions, anchor calm with three repetitions into the same circle. The circle now fires both states simultaneously.

⚡ ▶ Step 7: Test

Clear your mind completely. Then step into the circle with no attempt to generate the state. Does the state activate on its own? If the anchor is well-installed, you’ll feel the state rise as your foot enters the circle, automatic, without conscious effort.

If the state is weak, do more repetitions. If it’s partial, check whether your break states were clean enough between repetitions.

Using the Circle in Real Life

The Circle of Excellence is portable because it’s imagined. You don’t need an actual circle on the floor. Before a meeting, a presentation, a difficult conversation, imagine the circle on the floor in front of you and step into it. The spatial anchor fires, the state activates, and you enter the situation resourced.

Some practitioners install the circle at their office door, at the entrance to the stage, or at the threshold of any space where they need the resource state. Every time they cross that threshold, the state activates. Over time, the location itself becomes the anchor, the room where you always feel confident, the desk where focus happens naturally.

🔑 Variations

• The Portable Circle: Imagine the circle traveling with you, always available at your feet. Step into it anytime, anywhere.

• The Expanding Circle: Once inside, imagine the circle expanding to fill the entire room. Your resource state now permeates the space.

• Multiple Circles: Install different circles for different states. A gold circle for confidence, a blue circle for calm, a green circle for creativity. Step into whichever you need.

• The Circle for Others: In coaching or facilitation, have the other person build and step into their own circle. It’s a powerful experiential exercise that produces immediate state change.

⚡ Install Your Circle

Build a Circle of Excellence right now. Choose your most-needed resource state, the one that would make the biggest difference in your life this week.

1. Define the state precisely.

2. Imagine the circle with color and qualities.

3. Access a peak memory of the state.

4. Step in at peak. Hold 10 seconds. Step out. Break state.

5. Repeat 4 more times with the same or different peak memories.

6. Test: step in cold. Does the state fire?

Then use it tomorrow. Before the first situation where you need that state, imagine the circle and step in. Notice the difference.
